What Melissa has to say about healing arts:
How to put an amazing adventure in one paragraph is quite a
challenge. I have through the power of art to express what I didn't
know I was feeling, to conquer battles and find hope in the midst
of images from my imagination. It is my way of reaching out to God
and to others, while at the same time receiving an embrace of love
through the finished pieces. Dealing with chronic illnesses like
Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS), Fibromyalgia (FM), Chronic Fatigue;
along with depression, an eating disorder, numbness due to spinal
nerve damage and a bilateral hearing loss, can seem overwhelming
at times. Especially when listed in one sentence like that! Yet
I am extremely lucky, because art has taught me to release my anger,
fears and anxiety into something beautiful. I am not happy to experience
these things, but I am overwhelmed with joy to have become a survivor
of these daily challenges. I pray to share that hope with others
and help them to know there is a chance of recovery, maybe not physically,
but emotionally and spiritually. That will help us (by us I mean
you and me) to see a person with strength when looking at ourselves
in the mirror.
